Cranford Controls and the RoHS and WEEE Directives

RoHS and WEEE are complementary European Directives aimed at improving the environment and sustainability.

RoHS Directive

The restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS Directive) has been passed into law by the European Union. It affects businesses which manufacture, sell, distribute and recycle electrical and electronic equiptment which contains lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent, chrome, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). After July 1st 2006 the use of these materials will be banned in new products in Europe.

Cranford Controls has eliminated all banned substances from the majority of their manufactured products and are working closely with all their suppliers to achieve full compliance by July 1st 2006.

WEEE Directive

The waste electrical and electronic equipment directive (WEEE) applies to businesses which manufacture, sell, distribute and recycle in the E.U. Its scope is wide and includes all large and small household appliances, IT equipment, radio and audio equipment, electrical tools and telecommunications equipment.

The purpose of the WEEE Directive is to reduce the waste arising from electrical and electronic equipment by ensuring that as much as possible is re-used or recycled.

In accordance with the directive, from August 13th 2005 all Cranford Controls manufactured electrical and electronic equipment to which WEEE directive applies will be labelled with a "crossed out wheelie bin". In addition, as the UK government rules become clear, Cranford Controls will set in place appropriate methods to ensure the applicable equipment is directed to appropriate re-cycling facilities.
